The article is incorrect - churches only wed people who have already undergone the civil ceremony.
True, presently the priest will require a proper marriage certificate as a prerequisite in order to conduct a church wedding. The actual ceremony varies depending on a particular region. Outside of Brooklyn, the braking of the glass is not an establish tradition by any means. This kind of articles give Wikipedia a bad name.
