Kolkata Rainbow Pride Festival
The Kolkata Rainbow Pride Festival (KRPF) is an open collective of individuals, networks and organizations that supports LGBT rights in the city of Kolkata in India. It was formed in 2011 to take the initiative of organising Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk and runs a number of events such as art exhibits, film screenings, panel discussions etc. The Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk has become the longest-running event of its kind in South Asia. In 2012, it organised an exhibition of paintings, photographs of various artists and posters, pamphlets of NGOs working on gender and sexuality rights. Fifteen artists from India and abroad, and NGOs from different parts of India took part in this six-day exhibition titled ‘Broadening the Canvas - Celebrating Blemishes’ at the Bengal Art Gallery, ICCR, Ho Chi Minh Sarani.[1] It organises panel discussions on different social issues which are known as KRPF adda.[2] When KRPF started its journey, the Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk (KRPW) had a footfall of 500 people which reached the number of 1500 in next year, i.e., 2012.[3]
Every year Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk happens based on some social causes. In 2013, KRPW walked against every kind of Sexual Violences. [4][5][6]
In 2014, the walk was to support the right to gender expression along with right for individual sexual freedom. Even after heavy downpour KRPW got participation of more than a thousand supporters.
