This is a summary of the year 2016 in British music charts.
The UK Singles Chart and UK Albums Chart are two of many music charts compiled by the Official Charts Company (OCC) that calculates the best-selling singles and albums of the week in the United Kingdom.[1] Since 2004, the charts have been based on the sales of both physical singles and albums and digital downloads. Since 2014, the singles chart has been based on both sales and streaming. Since 2015, the albums chart has also been based on both sales and streaming.
Number one artists
In the singles chart, Justin Bieber returned to the top of the charts, having reached number 1 in 2015 with "Love Yourself". Shawn Mendes and Zayn have both claimed their first number 1 single as a lead artist.
In the albums chart, Adele continued at the top of the charts, having reached number 1 in 2015 with 25.
Notable events and records
For the first time in the history of the singles chart, the top three positions were occupied by the same artist. In the chart ending 14 January Justin Bieber was at number one with "Love Yourself", number two with "Sorry" and number three with "What Do You Mean?".
In the chart ending 4 February, David Bowie matched an album chart record of having 12 albums simultaneously in the top 40, a record set by Elvis Presley following his death in 1977. His album Best of Bowie also became the first ever album to reach number 1 due to streaming.
Chart summary
The following summaries refer to the Top 40 Official Singles Chart (not the full Top 100). These charts are archived by The Official Charts Company here.
The date of each chart as given by the Official Charts Company is the Thursday following its publication on Friday e.g. the chart which was announced by OCC and BBC Radio 1 on Friday 1 January 2016 was published as Thursday 7 January 2016. The actual sales, therefore, take place the previous week, e.g. chart dated 7 January 2016 comprises sales from 25–31 December 2015 (in this case sales which count towards 2015 totals).
