Bulletproof Monk is a 2003 motion picture starring Chow Yun-Fat, Seann William Scott, Jaime King, directed by Paul Hunter. It is loosely based on the comic book by Michael Avon Oeming.

Characters

The main characters are:

  • Monk With No Name (Chow Yun-Fat) - a Tibetan monk who doesn't age and has sworn to protect the Scroll of the Ultimate
  • Kar (Stifler) - a young, undisciplined projectionist and pickpocket who the Monk believes has the potential to be a monk like himself.
  • Jade AKA "Bad Girl" (Jaime King) - the daughter of a Russian mafia leader that Kar has a crush on.

Plot

The Monk, pursued by the mercenary employees of an aging Nazi, must choose his successor as guardian of the "Scroll of the Ultimate," based on the instructions of an ancient prophecy - and his likely choice appears to be Kar. The scroll bestows unlimited power of good or evil upon anyone who reads it.

Reaction

The film got mostly negative reviews from film critics. Critics complained that the fight scenes were not as well choreographed or directed as those in similar movies such as The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and also that the alternating comedic and action scenes were jarring.[1] The movie grossed about $23.4 million domestically, which was not good considering the film had a production budget of $52 million.[2]
