Kurt Thomas Travis (born January 16, 1984) is an American singer-songwriter and musician best known as the former vocalist of post-hardcore band Dance Gavin Dance and current vocalist for A Lot Like Birds. Shortly following A Lot Like Birds's release, Conversation Piece (2011), Travis released his solo EP album, Wha Happen?, through Doghouse Records in January 2012.[2] In March 2013, Travis released his self-titled second EP through Equal Vision Records. Kurt married Lauren Travis on September 14, 2013, who played bass guitar for his U.S. tour with Hotel Books.

With former Dance Gavin Dance guitarist and current member of Strawberry Girls, Zachary Garren, he recorded his debut full-length studio album, Everything Is Beautiful, which was released on May 14, 2014 through Blue Swan Records. In 2015, Kurt Travis toured with Adventurer & In Angles in the United States. Shortly after, he toured with Strawberry Girls and Rome Hero Foxes.

Travis launched his own independent record label named Esque Records in 2015.[3] He released the Kurt Travis/Paul Travis Split EP on February 1, 2016 through his record label.[4]

Musical career

2003–05: Five Minute Ride

In 2003, Travis released Bathroom Walls...Lipstick Secrets, followed by The World Needs Convincing of All That It's Missing through Rise Records.

2007–10: Dance Gavin Dance

In late 2007, Kurt Travis replaced Jonny Craig as the singer for the American post-hardcore band Dance Gavin Dance.[5] The band released 2 albums with Travis: one self-titled (also known as the "Death Star" album), releasing a music video for "Me and Zoloft Get Along Just Fine" and another album, titled Happiness, which spawned the single and music video for "Tree Village."

On August 18, 2010, Alternative Press announced Kurt's departure from Dance Gavin Dance via a press release from the band. He was replaced by the band's former vocalist Jonny Craig. The split was amicable, with Dance Gavin Dance officially stating "[they] and Kurt remain friends, and they wish Kurt the best in all of his future endeavors".[6]

2011–present: A Lot Like Birds

On January 9, 2011, A Lot Like Birds announced Kurt Travis would be joining the band as a second vocalist.[7] Since joining the band, they have released 2 studio albums, Conversation Piece (2011) and No Place (2013) and embarked on a nationwide tour with Just Like Vinyl and Dance Gavin Dance. Due to Jonny Craig's inability to tour at this time, Kurt also sang for Dance Gavin Dance, sharing duties with Lower Definition lead vocalist Matt Geise.

A Lot Like Birds is set to release their third studio album, currently titled IV, through Equal Vision Records in 2016.

Esque Records

Kurt Travis launched his own independent record label named Esque Records based in Sacramento, California. He has signed bands such as Floral, In Angles, Lemix J. Buckley, and Rome Hero Foxes to the label. Kurt Travis serves as label owner and manager and his wife, Lauren Travis, serves as PR.
