Pre-production

Bloody Crayons is a film adaptation of Josh Argonza's book of the same name.[5] In April 2015, Star Cinema picked up the film rights of the book, with Malou N. Santos and Charo Santos-Concio as executive producers. In the same month, it was officially announced that Jane Oineza would star, alongside Joshua Garcia and Manolo Pedrosa.[1][6]

On February 2016, almost a year later, Quark Henares was set to direct along with Earl Ignacio as assistant director. It was also revealed that Henares worked on the script for the past year. Julia Barretto, Khalil Ramos, Maris Racal, Sofia Andres, Yves Flores, Diego Loyzaga have been cast; also, Iñigo Pascual, Ylona Garcia, and Bailey May were cast in unspecified roles.[2] Two days later, Pascual announced via Twitter that he would be playing the role of John Jose.[3] On February 24, 2016, Garcia and May's roles were revealed to be Katy and Tommy, respectively, characters that are not from the book.[4]

Look tests for the actors occurred on February 22, 2016 and March 21, 2016.[7]

Filming

Principal photography was set to begin in the summer right after Henares finished making his film My Candidate, but he departed from the director's chair weeks before filming, reiterating through a tweet that he's "no longer connected" to the project.[8] Production was confirmed to be underway on April 6, 2016 when several of the cast posted photos of themselves on set on their respective Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages, with Enrico Santos at the helm.
