Yuppiechef.com is an online retailer of kitchen and homeware products founded in 2006 by Andrew Smith and Shane Dryden, [1] in Cape Town, South Africa.

Inception

Originally run from Andrew Smith’s lounge in his home, Yuppiechef.com was one of a few experimental E-Commerce projects initiated by co-founders Andrew Smith and Shane Dryden who were running a web development agency at the time.[2]

Early Notoriety

In 2010, Yuppiechef.com gained significant media attention when they ‘hijacked’ a campaign by retailer Woolworths called ‘Woolies Lovebirds’[3][4][5][6]. Yuppiechef.com took advantage of a misspelling of the campaign URL on Woolworth’s marketing material, registering the URL and posting a cheeky ransom note asking that Woolworths match any donations by Yuppiechef.com’s customers to a local charity they supported at the time.

Funding

The company received an undisclosed amount of funding from international hedge fund managers Tiger Global Management in 2011 and 2013.[7]

Pioneering E-commerce in South Africa

Known for their personalised hand written cards[8] and fanatical customer following[9], Yuppiechef is considered one of the pioneers of eCommerce in South Africa[10], and has independently been awarded the accolade of best eCommerce store in South Africa from 2010 - 2015[11][12][13][14][15][16].
