C. A. Bowers was born 1935 and grew up in Portland, Oregon and earned his first degree at Portland State University in 1958, and a PhD in education and social thought from the University of California in 1962. After teaching at the University of Saskatchewan (1962-1967) he joined the faculty at the University of Oregon where he taught in the Departments of Educational Studies, Humanities, Environmental Studies, and the Honors College. In 1993 he joined the faculty at Portland State University, retiring in 1998. He continued to teach on a pro bono basis at the University of Oregon until 2012.

He has also been invited to teach at York University, Northern Arizona University, the University of British Columbia, and the University of California. His writings on ecologically and culturally informed educational reforms led to his being invited to speak at 41 American and 39 foreign universities––in Australia, South Africa, South America, Europe, Canada, Taiwan, China, and South Korea. His books have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish.

In 1982 he gave the John Dewey Memorial Lecture, and in 1991 was voted by students at the University of Oregon as the most outstanding environmental faculty member.

He has written 23 books, with most focused on the cultural, linguistic and technological roots of the ecological crisis, and on educational reforms that promote ecological intelligence. He has also written over 105 articles.

He continues to write, give talks, and conduct workshops on an international basis. In addition, he has served on a pro bono basis as a consultant on technology/cultural issues for PRATEC in Peru.
