Sing is a 2016 American 3D computer-animated musical comedy film produced by Illumination Entertainment.[3] It was directed and written by Garth Jennings and co-directed by Christophe Lourdelet.[1] The film stars the voices of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Tori Kelly, Taron Egerton, and Nick Kroll.

The film will have more than 85 classic tracks from famous artists and will also have an original song by Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande called "Faith".[4] It premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2016[5] and will be released by Universal Pictures on December 21, 2016.

Plot

In a world populated by anthropomorphic animals, a koala named Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) works to keep his theater from closing down. To this end, Buster and his sheep friend Eddie (John C. Reilly) hold a singing contest to raise money, and the entire town auditions for a part in the show. The leading five are an overworked pig named Rosita (Reese Witherspoon) with her pig partner named Gunter (Nick Kroll), an arrogant and gambling white mouse named Mike (Seth MacFarlane), a punk-rock porcupine named Ash (Scarlett Johansson), a timid teenage elephant named Meena (Tori Kelly), and a British gorilla named Johnny (Taron Egerton), who wants to sing instead of following his father's criminal footsteps.

Cast

Other confirmed cast members whose roles have not yet been confirmed are Jay Pharoah, Leslie Jones, and Rhea Perlman.[1][9] Directors Edgar Wright, Wes Anderson and Chris Renaud appear in voice cameos. [11]

Soundtrack

The soundtrack album for the film will be released on 21 December 2016.

Release

Sing premiered as a special presentation on September 11, 2016, at the Toronto International Film Festival.[5] Universal Studios scheduled the film for a December 21, 2016 release.[12]

Critical response

On the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 88%, based on 9 reviews, with an average rating of 6.2/10.[13] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 67 out of 100, based on 5 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[14]

From the Toronto International Film Festival, Stefan Pape, of the British website HeyUGuys, gave the film a mixed review of 2/5, stating that "Garth Jennings's Sing effectively acknowledges early on that it's following a completely unoriginal formula, and yet carries on regardless".[15]
