M. P. Ahammed (born 1 November 1957) is an Indian businessman and the chairman of Malabar Group of Companies. He is also the founder of Malabar Gold and Diamonds, one of world’s largest retail jewellery groups.

According to Economic Times, in 2012 Malabar Gold and Diamonds made a turnover of Rs. 12,000 Crore,[1] and by the end of 2013, the company's turnover touched Rs. 22,000 Crore.[2]

Early life

M. P. Ahammed was born to Mammad Kutty Hajee and Fathima. At the age of 17, he started his first business venture of agro products. Later in 1981, at 24, he ventured into spices and copra business.

Career

Malabar Gold and Diamonds

On 17 September 1993, M.P. Ahammed entered the gold jewellery business by opening Malabar Gold, a jewellery showroom at Kozhikode on a capital of Rs. 50 Lakh, which was raised with the support of friends and relatives.[2] In the next decade, Malabar Gold saw a slow and steady expansion, and gradually became one of the most trusted gold jewellery brands in the world.

Malabar Gold opened their first showroom outside Kerala on 12 April 2005 at Bangalore. Malabar Gold was rebranded as Malabar Gold & Diamonds in 2012. In the same year, Malabar Group of Companies announced an expansion plan for Malabar Gold and Diamonds,[3] that will raise the company's retail network to 220, with an investment outlay of more than Rs. 35 billion by the end of 2015.[4][5] As of 2015, Malabar Gold and Diamonds have more than 150 showrooms in various parts of the IT world.

Malabar Developers

In 2005, marking the launch of Malabar Group of Companies’ real estate division, the first commercial building of Malabar Developers was launched at Kozhikode. In 2014, Malabar Developers initiated the plans for 'Mall of Travancore', which is designed to be a shopping mall of global standards. The foundation stone for Mall of Travancore was laid by the Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.[6]

Personal life

M. P. Ahammed is married to Subaida K.P, and together they have two children, Shamlal Ahammed and Soujath Asher. Shamlal Ahammed is the Managing Director, International Operations of Malabar Gold and Diamonds. Asher O, son-in-law of M. P. Ahammed, is the Managing Director, India Operations of Malabar Gold and Diamonds.
