CHCT is a Canadian television station, broadcasting in St. Andrews, New Brunswick and serving the Charlotte County area. The slogan of the station is "Where Charlotte County is on TV."

History

An independent community channel, CHCT launched on March 13, 1993 as a cable television outlet. CHCT was the first community-oriented television station licensed in New Brunswick. The station subsequently applied for a broadcast license in 2005, which was approved by the CRTC on November 23.

St. Andrews Community Television has operated since 1993 with the help of volunteers and donations from the public. By December 1993, St. Andrews Community Television was registered as a non-profit corporation. The first meeting of St. Andrews Community Channel Inc. was held on February 1994 and the Board has met on a monthly basis ever since.

New Developments

The community-oriented channel has been available only to cable subscribers within the town. Now, however, the operation has received a broadcast license from the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission and is authorized to broadcast over the air on channel 26 with the call letters.

The station will be broadcasting from antennas located on a tower atop the roof of the W.C. O’Neill Arena Complex in St. Andrews. This antenna system, combined with a transmitter, will provide good reception for all of the town, as well as for most residents of Bayside, Chamcook and Bocabec. To receive the channel, most viewers will need only attach a small set-top antenna to the antenna input of their television set and use the set’s channel changer to go to UHF channel 26. Cable subscribers will still receive Community Television on channel 10.

The board of directors of St. Andrews Community Television purchased the transmitter and associated equipment. The Town of St. Andrews donated $5,000 toward this $18,000 acquisition. The transmission components are now arriving, and will shortly be installed. A period of testing will then take place, after which the station will be certified for regular broadcasting. CHCT-26 expects to be on the air by fall 2006.
