An Arabic word meaning self. In Sufi teachings, it means more of ego. It is first among the six Lataif (cleanliness) or Lataif-e-sitta.

Types of Nafs

There are four stages of Nafs or egos that you encounter as you attempt to master them.

Nafs Ammara

The Dictating Ego: This ego tells you to commit evil. It has seven heads that needs to be chopped off.

  1. Takabbur or False Pride
  2. Hirs or Greed
  3. Hasad or Jealousy
  4. Shahwah or Lust
  5. Gheebah or Back Biting
  6. Bokhl or Stinginess
  7. Keena or Malice

Nafs Lawwama

The Loathing Ego: This ego loathes you on your evil deeds and thus saves your soul

Nafs Malhama

The Inspiring Ego: This ego inspires you to do good deeds and to be on the plus side

Nafs Mutmaina

This Satisfied Ego: This is the ideal stage of ego for Sufis. In this stage, the Sufi will be relieved himself of all materialism and world problems and would be satisfied with the will of God.
