The term "alt-left" is relatively new, and is used in contradictory ways[1][2] as there is no far left equivalent to the Alt-right.[3] The term began from conservative online media[4] and has been picked by Sean Hannity and Donald Trump.[5]
According to some commentators, the label refers to something that does not exist.[6] Mark Pitcavage of the Anti-Defamation League states that the word is made up by extremist groups to create a false equivalence between the far right and “anything vaguely left-seeming that they didn’t like.”[7]
Some liberal and left-wing media outlets, however, were using and explaining the term well before Trump brought it to public attention.[8][7][9][10]
Gil Troy, writing in Time in December, 2016 suggested that Trump himself spurred the growth of the alt-left, which he defined as the "extremists" who "turned violent in Oakland, Calif., and Portland" during the 2016 election.
