Emily Dawn Calandrelli is the host and producer of Xploration Outer Space, a show in the STEM block of Xploration Station.


Early life and education

Emily Calandrelli was raised in Morgantown, West Virginia and attended West Virginia University[2] She became a Truman Scholar while attending WVU which led to her working one summer in Washington, D.C. for her US Representative Alan B. Mollohan.[3] During her undergraduate studies at WVU, she was able to attain 2 internships at NASA.[4]

She later attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for her Masters.[2] In 2013, Calandrelli graduated with a Masters in Aeronautics and Astronautics and a Masters in Technology and Policy. As a Harvard NASA Tournament Lab visiting scholar, she assisted organizations in using crowdsourcing to solve technical challenges.[2]

Career

She is a professional speaker and presents on the topics of space exploration, scientific literacy, and equality of the sexes in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Calandrelli is also a contributing writer at TechCrunch.[3] Calandrelli calls herself the "Space Gal."[5] Of the importance of encouraging girls to get into STEM fields, Calandrelli told Women You Should Know:

"When we’re young, it’s not cool to like math and science. It’s considered nerdy. Because of this, our pool of potential innovators, researchers, scientists and engineers is severely limited. If girls think that STEM isn’t for them, we are losing an opportunity. I want to show a more relatable side to STEM and help get young students to try it out because it might just be for them.”[6]

She began hosting Xploration Outer Space in the Fox Xploration Station educational block in 2014.[2] She focuses on the science and technology behind the project that the show is exploring.[7]

In April 2017, she made several appearances on Netflix episodes of Bill Nye Saves the World.[8]

She has written the Ada Lace series of chapter books to introduce youth to science and technology.[9] Kirkus Reviews wrote of Ada Lace Sees Red, which she cowrote with Tamson Weston: "Gears, robots, color theory, and color blindness mesh nicely in this school-and-friendship tale."[10]

Awards

While an undergraduate student at West Virginia University she was awarded the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, and the USA Today All USA Academic Team.[3]

In April of 2017, Calandrelli was nominated for an Outstanding Host in a Lifestyle/Children's/Travel or Family Viewing Program[11] daytime Emmy Award for her work on Xploration Station.[12] Xploration Station received seven total award nominations from the daytime Emmy awards in 2017.[11]
