Geography

Gadhada is located at 21°58′N 71°34′E / 21.97°N 71.57°E / 21.97; 71.57[1]. It has an average elevation of 104 metres (341 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India censusTemplate:GR, Gadhada had a population of 26,751. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Gadhada has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 70%, and female literacy is 54%. In Gadhada, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age. Regarded as one of the most important places of pilgrimage for followers of the Swaminarayan Faith, Lord Swaminarayan stayed here for over 25 years of His active ministry.

History

Bhagwan Swaminarayan, the founder of the Swaminarayan sect of Hinduism lived in Gadhada for thirty years. Using the darbar of Dada Khachar as his base, he conducted preaching tours from here. It was in Gadhada that many of the discourses in the Vachanamrut, the chief scripture of the Swaminarayan organisation, were delivered.
