The Gungrave anime is made up of 26 episodes. The plot progresses contiguously through all the episodes, giving it the qualities of a serial. However, although the series isn't 'episodic', most episodes do have their own self-contained stories i.e. in the second episode Harry, Brandon and Jason set out to help their gang-member, Kenny. But this only leads to a new problematic that must be overcome in the next episode. This takes place throughout the series (apart from of course the final episode).

The majority of the episode titles are one word long, using a words that 'sums up' the idea of the episode. The excptions are when a single word is insufficiant to explain the episodes plot. These include "Young Dogs", "Big Daddy", "5 Years Later", and "Last Bullet". Another exception is the first and last episodes. Their title cards use Japanese Kanji to spell out "Destroyer in the Dusk" and "Dusk of the Destroyer". Both use the same kanji, but either side of "の" ('no' loosly meaning 'of' in English) swithed round (NB: A more technically literal, albiet grammatically incorrect in English, translation of the two episode titles are "Destroyer of Dusk" and "Dusk of Destroyer".)

01: 黄昏の破壊者 (Destroyer in the Dusk)

On a snowy night on a bridge, Beyond the Grave is awakened as he takes in hand the Cerberus to take on the artificially created zombie-like creatures, the Orgmen. When Dr. T and Mika, with Grave hide away in a desolated part of the city, the truth is revealed that Grave was Brandon Heat, a Sweeper for the criminal organisation, Millennion, that is hunting down Mika, and that their leader 'Bloody' Harry MacDowell killed Mika's mother.

The first episode, which takes place in the story's "present" sees Grave being overwhelmed by his conflicting memories.

Meanwhile, a meeting takes place at Millennion Head-Quaters amongst the Big 5 - including 'Bloody' Harry', where they discuss who could have possible destroyed so many of their Prototype Orgmen, and clues point to an event from 15 years ago...

As Beyond the Grave walks off, Mika is in persuit, and arrive at a cemetary after Grave struggles with his memories. When they arrive, the two are suddenly ambused by Millenion agents and a four-legged spider-like Orgmen which grave eassily defeats. After being shot in the back to protect Mika, Grave takes on an Orgman that expands in muscle mass ten-fold. Afer Dr. T arrives and launches towards him reinforcements (in the form of his armed coffin) Grave destorys the Orgman in a shower of shards.

Back at Millennion HQ, Harry MacDowell finds out the outcome of his attack when he recieves the last captured image from the giant Orgman which he recognises as Brandon Heat and threatens to destroy him "all over again".
