Ognjen Vranješ (Serbo-Croatian pronunciation: [ǒɡɲen ʋrǎɲeʃ]; born 24 October 1989) is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a Defender for Superleague Greece club AEK Athens and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

Club career

Vranješ started his career playing for his hometown club Borac Banja Luka in the Bosnian Premier League before moving to Red Star Belgrade in Serbia.[3] After struggling to establish himself in the first team of Red Star, he first went on loan to Napredak Kruševac and then to Sheriff Tiraspol from Moldova.[4] He caused some controversy when he celebrated Sheriff eliminating Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb in the qualification for the UEFA Champions League, wearing a Red Star shirt.[5]

On 12 January 2011, Vranješ signed a three-and-a-half year contract for Krasnodar in the Russian Premier League.[6]

On 12 December 2012, he signed a three-year contract with Alania Vadikavkaz.[7] In May 2013, he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear, which kept him off the pitch for almost 8 months.[8]

After he returned to the pitch, he signed a contract with Turkish side Elazığspor in January 2014.[9] In September 2014 he was on trials with Czech side Příbram but ended up returning to Elazığspor.[10]

On 2 February 2015, he signed for Turkish club Gaziantepspor.[11] On 25 January 2016, his contract was mutually terminated.[12]

On 26 January 2016, Vranješ signed for Spanish club Sporting Gijón until the end of season.[13] He debuted five days later, making several crucial clearances, ensuring his team a 1–0 win over Valencia.[14] His contract had an option for another season if Sporting didn't get relegated and he played 50% of minutes, which was activated at the end of the season.[15][16] However, on 23 August 2016 he agreed to rescind his contract with the club.[17]

On 25 August 2016, he returned to Russia, signing a two-year contract with Tom Tomsk.[18] He debuted in a 0–1 away loss to Amkar Perm on 10 September,[19] and scored his first goal later that month against Rubin Kazan.[20]

On 22 December 2016, Vranješ signed a contract with AEK Athens until June 2019.[21] He was sent off in his debut against Asteras.[22] He scored his first goal for the club in a comfortable 6–0 home win against Veria.[23] On 18 February 2018, Vranješ scored his first career hat-trick in a victory over Xanthi.[24]

International career

Vranješ was a part of the Bosnia and Herzegovina under-21 for several years.[25]

In August 2010, coach of the senior team, Safet Sušić, decided to include him in the squad to meet Luxembourg and France in the first matches of UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying.[26] Vranješ had to wait until 17 November to get his debut, when he started in a friendly match against Slovakia.[27]

Sušić included Vranješ in his team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.[28] After being on the bench in the first two games, he made his debut in the last group match against Iran, where he played the last 30 minutes.[29]

Personal life

Ognjen has an older brother, Stojan, who is also a footballer.[30]
