Lewis Singwah Tan (born 4 February 1987) is a British-born American actor, model and martial artist. He is best known for his roles, as Zhou Cheng in Netflix's Iron Fist and as Gaius Chau in the AMC martial arts drama series Into the Badlands, and most recently Shatterstar in Deadpool 2.
Biography
Tan was born in Manchester, England, but was raised primarily in Los Angeles, living also in France, Thailand, Spain, and China. Tan identifies as half-Asian, half-British. His father, Philip Tan, is a martial artist, actor, and stunt coordinator of Chinese Singaporean descent. His mother is a retired fashion model from the UK. He is the eldest of four brothers. His younger brother, Sam Tan, is also an actor. The youngest brother, Evan Tan, is a photographer based in LA whose work has been featured on the art for songs from artists such as Kali Uchis and Zack Villere.
His family moved to Los Angeles for Tim Burton's Batman. When he began college, Tan left the country to work on Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End in the Bahamas. He went on to play small supporting roles in other major pictures such as Hangover 3 and Olympus Has Fallen.
Tan continues to study under acting coach John Kirby, performing plays from Tennessee Williams to John Patrick Shanley and more. Tan's father trained him in martial arts from a young age and his love continued to grow and become a staple in his roles as he performs his own action scenes using his multiple styles ranging from Muay Thai boxing, Kung-Fu, Ju-Jitsu to Japanese Katana sword and more. In addition, he has been very outspoken about equal representation for the large Asian American population in Hollywood films.
Tan began training theatre as a young teen, leading many plays, studied performing arts in school and starting working on major television shows such as CSI: Miami, CSI: NY, NCIS: Los Angeles, Hawaii 5-0, 24, Rush Hour and Mortal Kombat X: Generations.
In 2016, Tan was cast in a recurring role in the first season of the Netflix television series Iron Fist. He starred in the role of Zhou Cheng, and received critical acclaim.[1]
In the same year, Tan was cast in the action film Den of Thieves starring Gerald Butler.[2] Currently, Tan has an upcoming series that is being developed.
On 25 September 2017, it was announced that Tan was cast in a recurring role in the third season of the AMC television series Into the Badlands. He will star in the role of Gaius Chau.[3]
On March 28, 2018, it was announced that Tan will portray Shatterstar in Deadpool 2.[4]
