About
Iwan Wirth (born 1970) is president of Hauser & Wirth, a Swiss contemporary art gallery, which he co-founded with his wife, Manuela Wirth, and mother-in-law, Ursula Hauser, in Switzerland in 1992.[6]
On a list of the "most influential people in the contemporary artworld" published by ArtReview, Iwan Wirth was placed third in 2013 and 2014;[7][8] he and Manuela Wirth were placed first in 2015, and third in 2016.[9][10]
In 2014, Iwan Wirth was appointed as a Trustee of the Royal Academy of Arts, London. [11] He is a member of a number of committees including the Maria Lassnig Foundation, [12] ,the Swiss Cultural Fund [13] , the Frieze Masters selection committee [14] , the Council of the Serpentine Gallery [15] and the South Asian Acquisitions Committee at Tate [16] . Iwan Wirth was the 2007 Honoree at the Swiss Institute / Contemporary Art Benefit [17] , and in 2015, Iwan and Manuela Wirth were both awarded a Doctor of Letters (Hons) from Bath Spa University. [18]
Wirth was the "honoree" at the annual benefit of the Swiss Institute of Contemporary Art in New York in 2007;[19] in 2016, he joined the board of trustees of the institute.[20] Since 2014 he has been a trustee of the Royal Academy of Arts in London.[21]
The Wirths sponsor a position as lecturer in Asian modern and contemporary art at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London.[22] They were both awarded honorary doctorates by Bath Spa University in 2015.[23]
They are part-owners of Manuela, a restaurant at Hauser Wirth & Schimmel in Los Angeles.[24] In about 2015, their company Highlands Hospitality bought two hotels in Braemar, in Aberdeenshire in Scotland.[25][26]
Hospitality
Iwan and Manuela Wirth are the co-founders of a hospitality business incorporating Durslade Farmhouse, a guesthouse onsite at Hauser & Wirth Somerset that forms part of the original Grade II-listed farm buildings dating back to ca. 1760,[27] and Roth Bar & Grill, a restaurant located at Hauser & Wirth Somerset. [28] The Roth Bar & Grill includes a site-specific bar created by Björn and Oddur Roth, and serves local, seasonal food. [29] The restaurant was listed in The Times’ ‘25 Best Places for Brunch’ in 2014. [30] In 2016, the Wirths opened the restaurant Manuela at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles’ arts complex in downtown Los Angeles.[31] The Wirths are restoring The Fife Arms, a 46-room Victorian hotel located in Braemar, Scotland.[32]
