Notice about new site layout

I added the manual to the main page, added a navigation bar to the top of pages, and moved some content to separate pages to keep the main page from getting too large and for readability purposes.

Henna, please look at my changes and if you would rather that it be done a different way, or have any suggestions regarding it, I won't be offended and will set these pages up in a different way.

Hi, your links to the 2.4 files were incorrect; I took the liberty to fix them. I hope this is okay. Thanks for adopting a great tool! --Gribeco 19:46, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

no big deal, didn't realise they were incorrect :) Henna 23:36, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Problem running the JAR

Hi Henna,

I just downloaded vf30.ar and tried to run it but I've got this error message :
C:\>java -jar vf30.jar

Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_01-b08)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_01-b08, mixed mode, sharing)

Is it because I don't have any vfdata.dat file ?

Thanks

--Effco 13:05, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

VF30 works with computers I use but I have JRE version 1.5.0_06-b05 installed. Try updating and see if that helps.
—-- That Guy, From That Show! (talk) 2006-03-10 08:03Z
Yes, VF3.1.1 Works For Me (TM) now with Java version 1.5.0_06-b05, Thanks ! --Effco 17:59, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

version 3.1.1

It works great here, thanks! —-- That Guy, From That Show! (talk) 2006-03-12 05:42Z

The only issue that I am having is that the color of Highlight edits by blacklisted users is also setting the text of all entries to that same color. So, blacklisted user entries can't be read (same foreground and background colors) and the other entries are hard to read unless I set blacklisted users to have a black color.
Other than that, everything is fine. —-- That Guy, From That Show! (talk) 2006-03-12 09:30Z

Hello,

When I click on any Live IRC edits, my Firefox browser always opens first a tab to http://www.u-bourgogne.fr prior to opening the URL I clicked on. Is this some kind of sponsoring to pay the IRC bandwidth or VF development ?

Thanks --Effco 08:28, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

no :), afaik it's not sponsoring :) Does it happen when you click on irc or when you click on edits in vandalfighter (slightly unclear :)).

IF it only happens in vandalfighter when there are special edits, (Special:Log/delete, Special:Log/block, ...) try using the latest version. Henna 09:30, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Henna, I'm using the very latest version (3.1.1) and it happens everytime I click on edits in vandalfighter. Very strange, you must have the link to http://www.u-bourgogne.fr written somewhere in the code. --Effco 18:07, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again. I've been looking for the string "www.u-bourgogne.fr" in the source code using Eclipse.org but didn't found anything (hopefully ;) ) so I guess this problem must be coming from the link provided when clicking on the edits in vandalfighter. --Effco 19:08, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm running vf on fr.wikipedia to test it :). when I click on edits, I just end up in the french wikipedia however. Henna 19:59, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe trying to run a anti-spyware program like Spybot or ad-aware? That might be it as well. effeietsanders 20:55, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm running 3.1.1 on fr: (XP, Firefox) and I don't see this. --Gribeco 20:00, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, my fault... In the configuration tab, I did uncheck the "Automatically detect browser" checkbox and put the "firefox %u" command to open Firefox. The "%u" usually means "pass the URL" for Firefox. But in this case, it is exactly like if you put "%u" in the address bar of Firefox and press Enter. Firefox queries goggle.com for the "%u" string, which is http://www.u-bourgogne.fr for me... I removed the "%u" and it works as expected. thanks, --Effco 22:21, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I use Linux and when I click on an edit in RC tab nothing happens (with "Automatically detect browser" checked). If I uncheck it an set "firefox %u" in the textbox, it opens a new firefox with two tabs: the right one and University of Alberta 's website. With XP the same version works without touching anything, any idea ? 16@r 13:30, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, if I'm not mistaken the browserchecking algorithm assumes netscape as standard browser on linux, so so far you'll have to set it manuallly. Henna 14:31, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, it works thank you very much. 16@r 10:42, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

HELP!

Why is CDVF disconnecting all the time now? I am an admin on en.wiktionary.org, and it keep disconnecting *RIGHT* when the goatse/move/flood vandals strike. --Connel MacKenzie 10:52, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wich version?, does it happen often? (so that I can check wether the irclog might help me in figuring it out. ) Henna 11:36, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Import Watchlist

Is there a trick to importing a watchlist? I copied my watchlist into a text file, then I tried to import it. Nothing appears to happen. Does any know what is required to import? If the function in the VF doesn't work is there a way to edit the vfdata.dat file to insert the list? Thanks, -Will Beback 20:48, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ponder, I haven't been messing with the watchlist function. you could make a seperate program to read the vfdata.dat file and insert the watchlist but it would be annoying to do :). on the top of my head I don't know another option, unless looking thru WP:CDVF. I'm working on a different way to export & import them tho. Henna 23:04, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I thought that maybe my watchlist is too big, but I can't even import a single-item list. I see at User:CryptoDerk/CDVF it says (about a similar feature):
 • When importing a list of admins to the whitelist, the list may look blank. The status will still indicate that the import was successful.
But the list does not act as if it were there either. Someone posted the same question at User talk:CryptoDerk/CDVF#Import watchlist in October, but never got a response there. -Will Beback 23:58, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Save the watchlist as an html file. Do not copy it, just FILE -> SAVE PAGE AS (or similar depending the browser). I just tried it and it works with the current version as well as older ones.
Let me know if that helps or not, Vandal Fighter is running a regular expression against html code to extract the links and expects an exact copy of the page, not a "copied into text" one.
—-- That Guy, From That Show! (talk) 2006-03-21 06:43Z
That did the trick. Thanks, it never occurred to me. Perhaps this detail should be noted somewhere on the description page. Cheers, -Will Beback 07:38, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I added that information to the manual as well. —-- That Guy, From That Show! (talk) 2006-03-21 20:24Z

Another VF question

Hello. I've tried various ways to whitelist the Special:Log/newusers so that it doesn't appear, but none worked. I'd like the other logs to still appear, though. Any hints? BTW, I watch #en.wiktionary. Thanks. Vildricianus 08:03, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

mm, completely forgot to answer, try entering a regex in the regexpanel for it? Henna 19:55, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I tried nearly any combination, but it doesn't seem to work. Vildricianus 11:22, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with latest version

The settings to only show IP edits, show newpages and the setting to show only black/watchlisted entries appears to be broken in the latest version of VF (3.4) Pegasus1138Talk | Contribs | Email ---- 21:39, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My problem is that I couldn't get it to launch a tab in my browser, though 3.3 works fine for that. But it looks great. The text is much easier to read. -Will Beback 10:43, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've been fiddling with the UI and apparantly broke some things that I didn't think about, whoops, there's a new vesion, wich should be fixec. Henna 19:53, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it works now. Thanks! -Will Beback 23:00, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
However VF 3.45 won't read my VFDATA.DAT file. Though I could reimport the watchlists and reset the configuarations, I have a large userlist to bring over, and there doesn't seem to be any way of doing it. -Will Beback 19:50, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've tried loading 3.4, which will read my VFDATA, and using its "export lists" action, then tried "import lists" in 3.45, but I didn't see any result. -Will Beback 19:57, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's working perfectly in 3.5bg. Thanks for your work on this valuable tool. Cheers, -Will Beback 01:12, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, almost perfect. I can "import lists", then sae the configuration, but when I reload the program the lists are no longer there and have to be re-imported. Other configuration items are saved correctly. -Will Beback 01:24, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'm testing 3.5bj. It loads and saves the configuration list properly. However it doesn't handle the "Show only edits on watchlist & user..." setting correctly. It either shows all edits, or none. -Will Beback 23:51, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Just to warn you, for some reason the list remains blank after starting again, the users are in the list but they're just not visible, sort the list and you'll see them.Henna 07:49, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Even with the watchlist/user lists showing, and "Show only edits on watchlist" checked, I still get all edits. Also, it doesn't seem to be able to reconnect after a disconnect. -Will Beback 09:09, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
try 3.5bk? Henna 15:58, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I downloaded 3.5bl, but when I load it the title bar says "3.5bk", so I guess that's what I'm trying. It still has trouble reconnecting after disconnect, though it works occasionally. But it still doesn't filter using the watchlist. I get all or nothing. -Will Beback 00:01, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Irritating bug in 3.4.1

I'm having trouble with the newest version. My default project is no:, and it's the only project I am interested in having the edits from. But the highrisk edits from en: somehow manages to get on the list. I've tried deleting the vfdata.dat file, but that doesn't help at all. I really hope this can be fixed. --Stianbh 11:16, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

try 3.4.5 or open vfdata.xml in any text editor (notepad on windows), find the line wich says '
true
' and change it to '
false
' Henna 19:52, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with 3.3 and 3.5 version

Hi! I'm an user from es: Wikipedia. I'd like to tell you a problem that I'm having with the vandl fighter.

Well, let's begin, I downloaded and executed the 3.5 Vandal Fighter seeing the es: RC . The next day, I put it again, but it worked on the en: wikipedia. I decided to change the configuration and it didn't work, though. I run more times the VF with configuration on es:, but it always doesn't work... it only works on en:

It happened to another Wikipedian friend... Do you know what it could be or shall I use the 2.2 version? =P

I downloaded the 3.3 version, but it work in the same way...

Thanks and sorry for my english, --Equi 23:02, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Now, I found out that if I download the 3.3 version, in the first time, it works... When I close it and execute it again, it lose the configuration... I'd like to know what can I do with the 3.3 version. :( Equi 01:58, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Does it loose the whole configuration or just the default project? Henna 23:06, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It restarts everithing... if I quit the program, I can't put the es:wiki and it only works in en:wiki with the default configuration. --Equi 01:21, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
When I execute it, it runs on the en wiki, althought I had put es.wiki as default proyect. --Equi 02:20, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'll look into it, but it will take a few weeks, as I'm temporarily working fulltime. Henna 14:33, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with vf35-48

I successfully run vf 2.2 for quite long time. I am trying to run 3.5-48 but I always get this after a launch:

I have the same problem with 3.5-50.

Version of Java on my Gentoo:

Solution

Solution is really very easy:

as root:

# emerge sun-jre-bin

as a normal user:

$ cd /path/to/new/vandalfighter
$ /opt/sun-jre-bin-1.5.0.06/bin/java -jar vf.jar

Simply: RTFM ;-) Miraceti 21:10, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia resource

Hey, I think VF uses the IRC feed to poll its data. I recently came across http://en.wikipedia.org/w/query.php and http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php . I'm not sure how they might be helpful yet, but the wheels are spinning. Just thought I'd let you know that resource exists, should you want to make use of it. :) --Brad Beattie (talk) 17:17, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mac OS X

I'm trying to run VF 3.3 on my Mac PowerBook G4. I'm running OS X 10.3.9. I'm able to load the application. Import the list of admins from the site as well as import my watchlist. I try and connect and I don't receive any feed. I was able to view the live feed in XChat so I don't think it has to do with my Java runtime environment. VF 3.3 works perfectly on my PC though. Hello, is there a way to use VF to monitor edits made by a netrange? For example, using regex to filter edits made by 205.202.0.0 - 205.202.255.255 could be useful for tracking network abuse for educational institutions.
