Tom Gibson was born in 1930 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He began his art career as a painter but soon began to take black and white photographs. Previous to this he had no formal schooling in any visual art.

His photographs have been in many exhibitions in Canada and the United States. Exhibitions include: Tom Gibson: False evidence Appearing Real, and A Journey to the West: Thoughts on the Banff Purchase.

He has received several Canada Council for the Arts grants, and is associated with the AGO(to which he has a lifetime membership), and the National Gallery of Canada.

In 1976 he began teaching at Concordia University where he was partially responsible for developing the Concordia photography program.

He currently resides in Montreal, Quebec, Canada with his wife Helena and continues to take photographs.
