Yalitza Aparicio Martínez (pronunciationⓘ) Spanish: [ɟaˈlitsa apaˈɾisjo maɾˈtines]; born 11 December 1993) is a Mexican actress who made her film debut as Cleo in Alfonso Cuarón's 2018 drama Roma, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

Life and career

Aparicio was born 11 December 1993,[1] in Heroica Ciudad de Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca.[2][3] Her parents are of indigenous origin; her father is Mixtec and her mother is Triqui.[4][5] She is not, however, fluent in the Mixtec language and had to learn it for the film.[6][7] Aparicio was raised by a single mother who worked as a maid.[8] She does not have formal training in acting, but rather has pursued a degree in pre-school education while already holding a degree in early childhood education.[9][10]

Aparicio is the first Indigenous woman to receive a Best Actress Oscar nomination and the second Mexican woman, following Salma Hayek for her role in the 2002's Frida. She has also earned nominations in the same category from the Chicago Film Critics Association,[11] the Critics' Choice Movie Awards,[12] the Hollywood Film Awards,[13] the Gotham Awards,[14] the San Francisco Film Critics Circle,[15] the Satellite Awards,[16] and the Women Film Critics Circle,[17] as well as recognition from Time[18] and The New York Times.[19]
