Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Stringed Instruments
Member introductions
[edit]- I'll try to keep the writing accurate, clear (and simple.) I'm more into the hands-on aspects of keeping a fiddle working, with enough playing skill to mostly stay out of trouble. Only limited access to (paper) references, even more limited time to chase citations, but will add those as I find them. I'll be interested to see what direction folks want to go with this project. __Just plain Bill (talk) 23:26, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
- Clear, accurate and simple I will second. I play electric and acoustic 12-string and mandolin, and dabble in anything with frets and also fretless ABG. And just learned how to tune a 'cello for a little girl who plays it at my church (and very well... her playing not my tuning, that is). Andrewa (talk) 19:03, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
I play a cello so im in. Carabera (talk) 21:52, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
Some things to think about
[edit]Wikiproject structure etc
[edit]I guess we should be a subproject of Wikipedia:WikiProject Music, and add ourselves to the instruments section of Template:WikiProject Music/Related WikiProjects and the list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory/Culture/Music#Instruments. Andrewa (talk) 20:09, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Tunings
[edit]- Stringed instrument tunings still needs work - there was a great spurt of activity over a year ago, then nothing.
- MOS:TUNINGS needs peer review - it's just my work so far.
- See also my external project The Online Encyclopedia of Tunings.
Note particularly:
- While I've adopted Helmholtz Notation at TOEOT my feeling is that Wikipedia should make the choice of Helmholtz or Scientific Pitch Notation optional, similarly to WP:ENGVAR.
- Actually TOEOT uses what I've called modified Helmholtz notation, which also shows up in Wikipedia quite independently of me from time to time.
- The dialect of Scientific Pitch Notation we tend to use isn't strict either, most people for example just say A4 not A4.
- The ordering and numbering of strings and courses is problematical, see
Comments welcome, here, on other talk pages, or at TOEOT or its related Yahoo! groups of course. Andrewa (talk) 20:09, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Listing all of the unreferenced biographies of living people for your project and Bruno Giuranna
[edit]Bruno Giuranna, a violinist, is an unreferenced living person (BLP), so it will probably be deleted if it is not referenced. I have no interest in this subject. Could someone please reference it? Thank you.
- List of cleanup articles for your project
Cleanup listings is a list of cleanup articles for each wikiproject on one designated page. A bot then collects all relevant tagged unreferenced biographies of living people, plus other lists onto one page in the wikiproject. This bot is updated regularly. As the page states: "Approximately 27% of all Wikipedia articles are flagged for cleanup. To deal with this enormous backlog, it seems reasonable to involve the topical WikiProjects in the cleanup process."
Adding this bot is very easy to add to a project: simply add a template to a new or existing page of the project.
The 616 projects which already have this cleanup listing and use this bot are here an example is here: Wikipedia:WikiProject London/Cleanup listing.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
[edit]Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
WikiProject X is live!
[edit]Hello everyone!
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

A new newsletter directory is out!
[edit]A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.
