Amiyah Scott (born Arthur Scott; January 11, 1988) is a transgender actress and dancer. She is best known for her role as Cotton on the Fox drama, Star.
Personal life
Amiyah Scott was originally born Arthur Scott in the city of Manhattan on 11 January 1988.[1] However, she was raised in the city of New Orleans, Lousiana.[2]
At 15, Scott underwent a partial male to female transition, and at 17, Scott fully transitioned into a female.[3]
Scott discovered the ballroom scene when she was seventeen. She and her family had been evacuated to Atlanta, Georgia, after Hurricane Katrina, and she began participating in the ballroom.[4]
Career
In 2015, it was announced that Scott had been added to the cast of the The Real Housewives of Atlanta for its eighth season; she was the first transgender woman to be cast in the whole of the The Real Housewives franchise.[5]
Scott became an internet celebrity when videos of her performing ballroom scene were uploaded to YouTube; she became "Insta-famous" after "Breaking the Internet" following the posting of "a split-screen image of her former self dressed as a young boy in a school portrait and as the glamorous woman she is today,".[6]
Scott later left the show, stating that was offended by the way the producers wanted her to behave on the show,[7], exploiting her sexuality and portraying herself as an overexaggerated drama queen.[8]
Producers of Bravo later claimed the reason Scott was not on the shower anymore because her being transgender was, "not enough to make [her] interesting,".[9]
Shortly afterwards, Scott was cast by Lee Daniels in the Empire spin-off; this was Scott's first acting role.[10]
Scott is also a motivational speaker who speaks to students around the country about the perils of bullying, self-esteem and self-acceptance.[11]
Scott also published her first book on 31 March 2019, entitled Memoirs of a Mermaid, which is a biography that details the tragedies and triumphs of her life.[12]
Awards
Scott received the ATV Fest "Rising Star Cast" award and was honored at the 2018 Pure Heat Community Festival during Atlanta Black Pride Weekend.[2]
Scott was also presented the GLAAD Rising Star Award on 9 November 2018 by actress Angelica Ross at the GLAAD Atlanta Gala.[13]
