LibreTexts (formerly The ChemWIKI[1] and STEMHyperlibrary[2]) is a nonprofit online educational resource project based at the University of California Davis.[3] Started in 2008 by Delmar Larsen, a Professor in the UCD Department of Chemistry with a single physical chemistry openly licensed textbook, LibreTexts has expanded to involve 11 institutions and over 100 faculty across the US and Canada.[4][5][6] LibreTexts has 13 library disciplines ranging from chemistry to humanities.[7] All materials are covered by Creative Commons Licenses.

Mission

LibreTexts stated mission "is to unite students, faculty and scholars in a cooperative effort to develop an easy-to-use online platform for the construction, customization, and dissemination of open educational resources (OER) to reduce the burdens of unreasonable textbook costs to our students and society."[5]

Support

Currently major support comes from the Department of Education FIPSE[8] 2018 Open Textbook Pilot Program[6][9][10][11]. Other funding comes from the University of California Davis, the University of California Davis Library, and the California State University System through its Affordable Learning Solutions[12] program and the MERLOT OER database. The collaboration depends on the participation of many faculty some of whom receive direct support from the project. Others have related grants and many others participate as part of their academic contributions to teaching, service and research.
