The Sayonara Player is a free, open-source lightweight Qt Audioplayer for Linux and BSD.

History

Its developer, Lucio Carreras, used the Qt widget toolkit as well as the multimedia framework GStreamer,[2] to develop the player. Sayonara is open source and uses the GPLv3 license.[3]

Characteristics

Installation

Sayonara can typically be installed under Linux with the distribution-specific package management. Some Linux distributions, including Ubuntu[4], Fedora and Arch Linux.[5][6], have instructions available on the website of the player.

User interface

The Sayonara player has a graphical user interface, meant to represent an intuitive alternative for Linux systems in terms of structure and operability through numerous analogies to the Windows players Winamp and Foobar2000. The window is divided into the player itself, where controls, track data and the cover can be seen, the playlist, and the music library. The presentation of the music library is in parts comparable with the Winamp library: a tabular view of the artists and albums as well as an overview with cover preview are possible. Unlike some other music players, Sayonara can manage several playlists.

Database

In particular, large music collections, which the player manages in one or more databases, should be manageable without difficulty, fulfilling one of the developer's targets to create an intuitive and easy-to-use player.[1] In test, the database reads 40,000 FLAC files faster than Winamp, but also neglects tag field information beyond the usual scope of standard. The search time is also somewhat shorter for 40,000 FLAC files: results are displayed either as quickly as possible during entering or after confirmation with the enter key.

Comparison with other audio players

In contrast to the Guayadeque Music Player, which achieved a very good average user rating at Sourceforge in 2014, The Sayonara player is being actively continued. Few players support large databases at high speed and can manage multiple playlists (multiple playlists is not supported by Winamp, for example). In contrast to Audacious and Rhythmbox, the Sayonara user interface (e.g., the playlist management) and the database are easier to handle yet of similar functionality. A dark skin is included. In the direct database comparison to Winamp, it is noticeable that not all metadata is read in, and some functions are missing, e.g., which songs were played how often and when last played. However, dynamic playlist creation, in which songs of similar artists or music styles are automatically added, is supported. The integration of web services like internet streams and Last.fm scrobbling show that the audio player is not limited to playing local files or to pure offline use.

In April 2019, German media designer Theis Klußmeier conducted a comparison between 16 Linux audio players on blog.tice.de. The basis was a music collection of over 10,000 titles. He noted the Sayonara Player as being "definitely worth seeing" and called it "convincing".[7]

Scope of functions

Some functions of the player are:[8][9]

  • Music playback with Crossfader
  • Music database with search function, cover display and genre filter
  • Management of several databases
  • Management of multiple playlists
  • Last.fm Scrobbling: Automatic addition to the playlist (in so-called "smart mode", i.e. additional songs are added automatically)
  • Access to web streams and podcasts
  • (automatic) cover display and support for integrated covers
  • Metadata Editor
  • Equalizer
  • Frequency spectrum and level display
  • Display of lyrics (retrievable from different web services)
  • Player available in various languages
