36 (Eastern) Signal Regiment was a Territorial Army regiment in the Royal Corps of Signals in the British Army. The regiment formed part of 2 (National Communications) Signal Brigade, providing military communications for national operations. It was disbanded effective 31 March 2010, with elements being subsumed by the 37th and 39th Signal Regiments.
Organisation
The regiment at the time of closure comprised:
- Regimental Headquarters - Cambridge
- 45 (Close Support) Squadron
- SHQ and A Troop - Colchester
- B Troop - Ipswich
- C Troop - Southend
- 54 (Support) Squadron
- SHQ and Troop - Cambridge
- 60 (Royal Buckinghamshire Hussars) Signal Squadron
At its formation in 1967, the Regiment was formed of squadrons made from the post war divisional signal regiments:
- 44th (Home Counties) Signal Regiment (Cinque Ports) Territorial Army,
- 45th (Essex) Signal Regiment Territorial Army, and
- 54th (East Anglian) Signal Regiment Territorial Army
Its layout was as follows:
Regimental Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron - Selsdon Road, Wanstead (Redbridge, East London).
These later moved to Gordon Fields, Ilford
44th Signal Squadron (V)
- Squadron HQ and 3 signal troops - all Watling Street, Gillingham, Kent
The Squadron HQ later moved to Grays, Essex, with signal troops at Grays and Southend
45th (Essex) Signal Squadron (V)
- Squadron Headquarters and Troop - Brentwood
- Troop at Circular Road East, Colchester
- Troop at Gordon Fields, Ilford.
The Squadron headquarters later moved to Circular Road East, Colchester, on the closure of Brentwood in 2006
54th (East Anglian) Signal Squadron (V)
- Squadron HQ & Troop - Cambridge
- Troop - Ashburnham Road, Bedford, and
- Troop - Aylsham Road, Norwich.
Light Aid Detachment (LAD) REME - Newbury Park (Redbridge, East London)
In 2006 the Regiment changed roles to become part of 2nd (National Communications) Signal Brigade. During these changes 44 (Cinque Ports) Signal Squadron was closed, and 60 (RBH) Signal Squadron gained from 71 Signal Regiment. The Signal troops at Bedford and Cambridge were attached to 60 (RBH) Signal Squadron, Norwich signal troop converted to Army Air Corps, and 54 Squadron moved to Ilford.
Under the Strategic Review of the Reserves in April, 2009 the Regiment was downsized to a squadron, and became the 36 (East Anglian) Signal Squadron, based at Colchester, under 37 Signal Regiment based at Redditch.
36 (East Anglian) Signal Squadron comprises:
- 844 Cinque Ports Signal Troop - Colchester
- 845 Essex Signal Signal Troop - Colchester
- 854 East Anglian Signal Troop - Cambridge
60 (Royal Buckinghamshire Hussars) Signal Squadron also downsized to 860 (Royal Buckinghamshire Hussars) Signal Troop and became part of the Berkshire Yeomanry, 94 Signal Squadron, under 39 (Skinners) Signal Regiment, at Bristol.
Both 860 Signal Troop at Aylesbury and 854 Signal Troop at Cambridge were removed from the Army's order of battle in the SDSR changes at the end of 2013, and in April 2014 907 Signal troop at Chelmsford moved from 68 (Inns of Court & City Yeomanry) Signal Squadron to 36 Signal squadron, allowing the squadron to be renamed as 36 (Essex Yeomanry) Signal Squadron.
Affiliations
36 (Eastern) Signal Regiment is affiliated with the Worshipful Company of Poulters and each year the Master presents the "Poulters Plate" to the best soldier in the Regiment.
