Angelo Cardona (born 5 January 1997) is a colombian peace and disarmament activist. He is co-founder and member of the Youth Network of the International Peace Bureau (IPB). He is vice-president of the British organisation, Humanity United for Universal Demilitarisation (HUFUD), and is a founder member and executive director of ‘Red Latinoamericana de Jóvenes por la paz’ (in English: Latin American Youth Network for Peace). In 2019, his work for peace and disarmament earned him the Inspirational Icon at the 21st Century Icon Awards in London, England.[1][2][3]

Activism

From an early age he showed great interest in peace as he was born and grew up in Soacha, one of the cities that received the largest number of displaced people due to the internal armed conflict in Colombia between the Colombian State and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.[4][5] In 2013, he was selected to be part of the program, ‘Seed of Change’ from Youth in Action from the European Commission.[6] Programme which was led in Colombia by the organisation, Schools of Peace,[7] with the aim of empowering young people through workshops on economic, social and cultural rights. At the end of the project, each participating country in the program chose five representatives to participate in a cultural exchange in Sicily, Italy. Cardona, was one of the selected persons to participate in the exchange, This being the first time that he represented his country internationally.[8]

International Peace Bureau

In 2016, at age 19, he became the youngest member of the International Peace Bureau (IPB),[1][2] and was invited to participate in the IPB World Congress, 'Disarm for a Climate of Peace' between September 30 to October 2, 2016 in Berlin, Germany.[9][10][11] There, he, along with 31 other young people from 25 countries who participated in the congress, founded the International Peace Bureau Youth Network (IPBYN).[12]

During 2017, Cardona began his activism for the defence of the Special Jurisdiction of Peace, (JEP, for its acronym in Spanish) when the Colombian Democratic Centre party began to propose changes to the JEP. Which lead him to found, along with other leaders of pacifism in Colombia, the national movement 'Yes to the JEP'. a movement that has been fighting to protect the JEP from the streets and the Congress of Colombia.[1][2][5][13]

In 2018, the IPB Youth Network began to prepare pre-conferences for young people in different countries of the world, before its world youth conference 'Transform' in Berlin, 2019; where Cardona is one of the speakers.[14] During the pre-conferences that he held in Latin America, he met the Argentine pianist and president of Humanity United for Universal Demilitarisation (HUFUD), Alberto Portugheis, with whom he made an alliance to organise the first IPBYN pre-conference in Europe, on September 15, 2018 at Rudolf Steiner House in London, England.[15] Cardona gave his lecture entitled 'the hidden shadow of war', in which he spoke about the business of war and how it has impacted the implementation of the peace agreement in his country, Colombia, and the progress of the efforts for peace in different regions of the world.[16] On September 21, International Day of Peace, IPBYN held its last pre-conference of 2018, 'Challenges and Positive Approaches to Peace' in Berlin.[17]

On September 20-22, 2019, the IPBYN World Congress was held, 'Transform! Towards a culture of peace ', in an alliance with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) in Berlin, Germany. The Congress had approximately 100 participants from 28 countries, mostly young people. Cardona participated in the panel, 'How do we transform our societies?', along with Sharan Burrow, Secretary General of the International Trade Union Confederation.[14][18]

Cardona is also part of the international Steering Group for the Global Campaign against Military Spending (GCOMS).[19] The campaign launched in December 2014, by the IPB,[20][21] with the aim of raising awareness and changing the discourse on military spending begins to expand internationally, it currently has more than 100 organisations in 35 countries.[19] As part of the campaign, the IPB proposes April 12, as the Global Days of Action on Military Spending (GDAMS).[22][23]

Latin American Youth Network for Peace

In 2018, the International Peace Bureau Youth Network began to prepare a series of pre-conferences of youth for peace around the world, which would end in the world conference, 'Transform! Towards a Culture of Peace' in Berlin, 2019.[18] So that the Youth Network could make their conferences in Latin America with a name in Spanish, Cardona founded the Latin American Youth Network for Peace (in Spanish: Red Latinoamericana de Jóvenes por la Paz) along with the members of the IPBYN in Latin America. The network is launched in the first pre-conference of the IPBYN, on April 25, 2018 in Medellin, Colombia, during the '2nd International Congress of Science and Education for development and peace' at the University of Antioquia.[24] Then, the Latin American Youth Network for Peace, carried out the second pre-conference, on July 3, 2018, in the Senate of the Argentine Nation, during the international conference 'Let's Talk about Peace'.[25] The Latin American Network held its third pre-conference, on October 9, 2018, this time at the Tecnologico de Monterrey campus in Mexico City.[26]

Humanity United for Universal Demilitarisation

Due to the intensification of killing of social leaders and promoters of the Peace Agreement in Colombia.[27] Cardona moved to London in 2018. He became vice-president of Humanity United for Universal Demilitarisation, an organisation which he directs along with pianist and Nobel Peace Prize nominee in 2008, Alberto Portugheis.[28][29][15] In December 2018, he was invited as a speaker by the Amnesty International group in Berlin, to share his knowledge about the implementation of the peace agreement in Colombia.[30] Cardona, has denounced the human rights violation that his country is experiencing in different international decision-making scenarios such as the United Nations Headquarters, German Parliament, British Parliament, Argentina Congress and Colombian Congress. His fight for peace and human rights earned him the Inspirational Icon of the 21st Century Award, 2019 in London, England.[1][2][3][31]
