Suqovuşan (Azerbaijani: Suqovuşan) or Madaghis (Armenian: Մադաղիս, romanized: Madaghis) is a village in the Tartar District of Azerbaijan Republic, but is de-facto controlled by the Republic of Artsakh and populated by ethnic Armenians. It is located 30 kilometers north-west of the left bank of the river Tartar. There is a secondary school in the village.
The village has been the site of the 2016 Nagorno-Karabakh clashes. On 2 April, 2016 Azerbaijani media claimed that Azerbaijani forces had attacked and taken control of the Madagiz. [1] The village remained under the Republic of Artsakh.
It was again the site of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. On 3 October, 2020 Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev again announced that Azerbaijani forces had attacked and taken control of the village. He also announced that he was remaining it from Madagiz to the newly invented name Suqovuşan. [2] The new claim was disputed by Israeli blogger Alexander Lapshin. [3]

"Re: Aliyev's claim of capturing Madagis earlier today - Madagis is a small Armenian settlement abt 3km from LoC, but a key transport knot in NE Karabakh - I would just note that back in April 2016, Azerbaijan made the same claim, but proved not to be true. We will see this time." (Tweet) – via Twitter.
