Old Carpet Factory (Colloredo-Mansfeld Residence) is a historical house located at Hydra island in Greece. Built in the end of the 18th century for the prominent Tsamados family the house was later donated to the church to be used as a weaving school for the production of textiles and carpets. This is where the residence gets its current name.[1]

History

Hydra houses were traditionally constructed of stones whitewashed with lime and had very narrow rectangular shape, their tile roofs exhibited no ornaments. In contrast, the mansions and manors of wealthy shipowners afforded the luxury of size and space. [2] Like other residences built by Hydriot captains of the late 18th century, Old Carpet Factory exhibits open interiors, very high ceilings treated with carved wood, door casings, stone arches, geometrical designs, an open terrace overlooking the harbor and a walled private garden. [1]

In the 1950s sculptor John La Farge purchased the house and renovated it by removing part of the deteriorated roof and glazing the retaining arch to create a big window opening into a private courtyard. La Farge arch together with three large elegant windows[1] became the signature architectural features of the house. In 1976 painter Kristina Colloredo-Mansfeld purchased the house[3] and it has been in the family ever since. In 2015 the current owner Stephan Colloredo-Mansfeld converted the lower part of the house into a recording studio, incorporating the acoustics of high ceilings and water cisterns.[4] For years the house has been an unofficial art residency[5] hosting and supporting projects of artists such as Sebastien Tellier, Ariel Kalma, Margherita Chiarva, Gorkem Sen, the inventor of yaybahar and others.

John La Farge's arch constructed in the 1950s featuring Giorgios Vogiatzakis' artwork "Curcuma Sun and Moon," 2016.

A pulp-noire novel "De les kouventa / Δε λες κουβέντα"[6] (“Athens Undocumented”) by French-Greek writer Makis Malafekas describes the events at the Old Carpet Factory house with one of the center characters drawn from Stephan Colloredo-Mansfeld[7].

"Power of Power" EP by Mind Gamers [8]was partially composed and recorded at the Old Carpet studio with the promo video featuring the residence and Hydra island. [9]
