Revision as of 05:01, 22 March 2008

The 2008 Pennsylvania Democratic primary will take place on April 22, 2008. It will be open to registered Democrats only. Senator Barack Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton are the only 2 democratic candidates on the ballot.[1] There are 158 delegates which will be awarded on a proportional basis and 30 "superdelegates", fourteen of which have announced support for Sen. Hillary Clinton and four have committed to Sen. Barack Obama. [2]

Campaign

Bill Clinton at a "Solutions for America" rally at Washington & Jefferson College on March 11, 2008[3]

Most political observers believe Pennsylvania is a "must-win" for Senator Clinton to continue her campaign.

Eligibility

In order to vote in the primary, one must be:[4]

  1. "A citizen of the United States for at least one month before the next primary, special, municipal, or general election."
  2. "A resident of Pennsylvania and the election district in which the individual desires to register and vote for at least 30 days before the next primary, special, municipal, or general election."
  3. "At least 18 years of age on or before the day of the next primary, special, municipal, or general election."

Convicted felons may not vote from prison.

Registration

Individuals may register to vote at County Voter Registration offices, through the mail, at a Department of Transportation office, or at various other government agency offices.[5]

Voters must register 30 days prior to the election in order to be eligible to vote; for the 2008 Democratic primary, this means that March 24 is the last day to register.[6]

Polls

Public opinion polling from early January 2007 through mid-February 2008 consistently gave Hillary Clinton a double digit lead over Barack Obama.[7] The most recent poll, released on March 17 showed Clinton leading Obama 56%-30%.[8]
