On December 10, 2019, a mass shooting occurred at a cemetery and a kosher grocery store located in the Greenville section of Jersey City, New Jersey, in which six people were killed. Three civilians, a policeman and two attackers were killed in the shooting. Another civilian and two police officers were wounded.[1][2]

Shootings

On December 10, 2019, at around 12:30 pm, a police officer approached two men at the Bayview Cemetery in regards to an investigation that he was conducting.[2][3] It is believed that the detective approached the suspects to confiscate guns in a van which was related to a murder the previous weekend in nearby Bayonne. The police officer was shot and killed.

The suspects then fled and drove about one mile to a grocery store,[2][4] where they exchanged gunfire with the police for over an hour until they were shot and killed.[5]

Stolen U-Haul vehicle

The perpetrators stole a U-Haul vehicle following the first shooting.[6] The vehicle is under investigation and police said it had been moved away as it could contain an incendiary device.[7][8] Later on, police found that there was a live pipe bomb inside the truck.[9]

Attackers

On December 11, local news outlets identified the shooters as David Anderson and Francine Graham. The two were killed by police during the siege. It was declared that the shooting was a targeted attack and that Anderson was connected to the Black Hebrew Israelite movement. There were postings that connected to Anderson's social page with anti-police and anti-Jewish writings.[10]

Motive

Mayor of Jersey City Steven Fulop, referring to the market, tweeted that the shooters "targeted the location they attacked."[11]

Victims

The dead police officer was 39 years old.[2] Two officers were wounded in the shootout.[12]

Three civilians also died.[1] Two of them were identified as the 33-year-old female store owner, and a 24-year-old customer from Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York City.[13][14]

Response

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene. They included the Jersey City Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department and the New York City Police Department

The Jersey City Medical Center, 12 Jersey City Public Schools in the vicinity as well as that of Sacred Heart Church were on lock-down during the incident.[15][16] Up to 100 children were held in the yeshiva next to the market.[12] Public transportation on NJ Transit buses and the Hudson Bergen Light Rail in the area were suspended. The New Jersey Turnpike Newark Bay Extension was temporarily closed.[17][3]

Condolences from politicians

President Donald Trump was briefed about the incident at the White House. He gave his condolences to the victims and their families via a tweet.[18]

Governor of New Jersey Phil Murphy expressed his condolences, his thoughts and prayers for police, residents, and school children, and praise for the slain detective in a series of tweets.[6][19]

Cory Booker, junior United States Senator from New Jersey, and Mayor Fulop also expressed their condolences.[citation needed]
