35°56′37″N 80°24′42″W / 35.94370°N 80.41162°W / 35.94370; -80.41162 Advance (pronounced with the stress on the first syllable) is an unincorporated community located in Davie County, North Carolina. It has a total land area of 62.3 square miles (161 km2) and is located along Hwy NC 801 and Hwy 158 just south of Bermuda Run near the western bank of the Yadkin River. Advance is a part of the Piedmont Triad and is home to Shady Grove Elementary School. Neighboring communities and municipalities include: Bermuda Run, Mocksville, Hillsdale, and Yadkin College.

Name origin

Various accounts exist for the origin of the town's name. Some suggest the name was derived from the name of a popular resident and freed slave, Addington Vance. Other accounts suggest the community was named by residents who hoped that with the addition of a post office, the community would advance. Yet another possibility is that the town was named after the Confederate blockade steamer "Advance", which was commonly referred to as the AD Vance.

Famous Residents

The small community of Advance has been blessed to have had a great man in their midst. He is one of the greatest existentialist thinkers of our time, and some even claim he rivals that of Friedrich Nietzsche. He is Colbourne. Darren Colbourne. Aside from pondering all the great questions of life, he enjoys playing golf and killing zombies in his free time. Darren sadly disappeared two and half years ago. The whereabouts of Mr. Colbourne remain unknown, as the last time he was seen he was surrounded by transcendentalist zombies and savagely hacking his way out with the aid of his trusty friend, Layla. There have been various sightings of Colbourne, but none have ever actually been confirmed. Rumor has it that he has pitted himself in an eternal war against forces of evil manifested in Catholicism somewhere in Rhode Island. Darren, if you are still out there, good luck. what the heck whatever that guy said just shows how stupid they are. perfect example of Davie county
