The Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps more commonly known as "BVAC" is an Ambulance Provider in Dutchess County, New York. They provide both BLS and ALS(through contracts) services to the City of Beacon and surrounding areas with mutual-aid agreements. BVAC operates under the Dutchess County ID of "82". To this date, BVAC is the only volunteer ambulance corps in Dutchess County.

History

The organization was first formed in 1958[1] after much need for an ambulance service in the city. The initial founder, Walter Detwiller, recruited 29 individuals from the City Of Beacon Fire Department to join the ambulance corps. The first Ambulance that BVAC used, was a 1948 Cadillac Ambulance, with over one hundred thousand miles on it. During this period the ambulance was housed at the Beacon Fire station. Shortly there after in 1975 as the fire department had growing pains, and needed room for more apparatus, BVAC needed to find a permanent home.

Construction soon commenced on the current building, enlisting the help with mainly volunteers, as well as a donation from the Beacon Fire Department, of two bay structure. The facility was opened in 1980 and currently is the same building.

Current Fleet

The current BVAC fleet includes 3 New York State Certified Ambulances, as well as a BLS Flycar and a MCI Trailer.
