The oceanic supervisory maritime authority of the People’s Republic of China, the China Marine Surveillance (Chinese Simplified Characters: 中国海监; Pinyin transliteration: "Zhōngguó Hǎijiǎn"; literal translation: "China Sea Supervisor") is not the China Coast Guard ("中国海警"; "Zhōngguó Hǎijǐng"; "China Sea Police"), which is under the Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China.

As a part of the Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of China's China Maritime Safety Administration (or more literally the "China Sea Affairs Bureau"), the CMS has the authority to examine transport safety in sea vessels.
