DRASTIC (Decentralized Radical Autonomous Search Team Investigating COVID-19) is an organization of amateur researchers investigating the origins of COVID-19, in particular the lab leak idea.[1][2][3][4][5] According to DRASTIC, they have 30 core members, whose activity is primarily organized through the social media website Twitter.[1][6][7]. They formed near the beginning of 2020, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of DRASTIC's members use pseudonys.[1][6]

Statements

DRASTIC members have called for a "full and unrestricted investigation" into the origins of COVID-19, conducted independently of the World Health Organization.[1]

In June 2021, DRASTIC released a video appearing to show bats present inside the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which appeared to contradict a previous statement made by Peter Daszak.[8][better source needed]

Disputes

Their pseudonymity and their style of engagement with scientists on Twitter has drawn criticism.[1] Members have engaged in "ugly incidents" on Twitter involving personal attacks against virologists and epidemiologists, falsely accusing some of working for the Communist Party of China.[1] In April 2021, CNET said that "the abrasive attacks have, at times, overshadowed the team's work."[1]
