Biography

Early Life

Eliezer Lipa Yaffe was born in Yanovka village in the Khotyn district of the Region of Serbia in the Russian Empire (present-day Ukraine). His family had a rabbinic lineage, including Rabbi Mordechai Yoffe, a leading halakha authority who lived in Prague in the 17th century. Yaffe's father Reuven was a distinguished Talmid Chakham who made a living as an accountant[1][2]. His mother was Chaya Sarah[3]. Yaffe was raised in the Jewish tradition and from a young age studied Talmud[2].
