Greg V. Smith (born 1968) is an American politician in the US state of Oregon. He is a member of the Oregon House of Representatives, serving District 57. He resides in Heppner with his wife Sherri and their five kids.[1]

Educational background

Smith graduated from Eastern Oregon University in 1992 with a Bachelor's Degree in liberal studies.[2] He later earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration. He is listed as one of Eastern Oregon University's Distinguished Alumni and has served on Eastern Oregon University's Board of Directors.[1]

Political career

Early Political Involvement

After graduating from college, Smith served as a Community Advisory Member for United States Senator Gordon Smith and a Legislative Aid for then Oregon House of Representatives Majority Leader Greg Walden. In 1996 Smith served as an alternate delegate in the Republican Convention.[2]

Oregon House of Representatives

In 2000 Smith successfully ran for Oregon State Representative for District 59. He beat Democratic challenger Linda Harrington 69.15% to her 30.71%.[3] With new district lines drawn, in 2002 Smith successfully ran for District 57's State Representative and has been re-elected four times since.[citation needed]

Though Smith has severed on many House Committees throughout his career in Oregon's House of Representatives, he currently is serving on The Ways and Means Committee as well as two of its Subcommittees: The Ways and Means Subcommittee On Education and The Ways and Means Subcommittee On Public Safety. He is also serving on The Emergency Board as well as The Transportation Committee.[4] In May 2010 Smith was appointed to serve on a special educational policy committee focusing on Higher Education and the Oregon University System.[5]

Awards and Recognitions

Smith has earned a 100% voting record with the Taxpayer Association of Oregon,[6] Oregon Gun Owners of America,[7] Oregon Farm Bureau, Oregonians for Food and Shelter, and the National Federation of Independent Businesses. The Oregon Cattlemen’s Association has given Smith the “Lariat Laureate”, their highest award. The Oregon Fair Association has given Smith the title “Grand Champion Legislator” for the work he has done on their behalf. He has also received the “Outstanding Freshman Legislator of the Year” award during the 19th Annual Oregon Rural Health Conference.[4] The NRA has given Smith an A+ grade on his votes regarding gun related legislation.[8]

Other Political Involvement

Apart from the Oregon House of Representatives Smith has seved as the Second Vice-President to the Pacific Northwest Economic Region, a post he had held since 2001. The Pacific Northwest Economic Region is a group of US states and Canadian Providences and Territories making up the north west portion of the North America. Their mission statement is "to increase the economic well-being and quality of life for all citizens of the region" as well as "to coordinate provincial and state policies throughout the region; to identify and promote "models of success;" and to serve as a conduit to exchange information."[9]
