Hudson Middle School is a middle school in Hudson, Ohio, serving the Hudson City School District.
Location
Hudson Middle School is located at 77 North Oviatt Street in Hudson, Ohio. Hudson Middle School was first located at the district's East Woods School on North Hayden Parkway, but moved when the new Hudson High School (Ohio) was constructed.
Administration
The current principal is Chuck DiLauro. The assistant principals are Karen Weber and Kimberly Cockley.
Students & Culture
There are over 1000 students at HMS. There are over 300 students in the sixth grade. HMS encourages students to take a world language in 8th grade. Also, the middle school offers a Drama Club, averaging one shows a year, where the students are given the opportunities to build the sets as well as manage the lights and sound of the performances.
Building History
The building opened as the district's high school in 1928. The school cost a total of 84,000 dollars and currently spends 1,700 dollars a year on repairs.[1]
Later, additions and renovations were needed to keep up with the school district's growth. The first addition constructed was in 1955. Soon after, the current gym and additional classrooms were added in 1969. Until the opening of Hudson Junior High School (now known as East Woods Elementary) at 120 N. Hayden Parkway in 1964, grades seven through twelve took classes at this building.
In 1972, a cafeteria and media center were constructed in a two-story addition built over the former faculty parking lot. Also at that time, the original gymnasium, located opposite the auditorium, was divided into classrooms on the first and second floors. In 1992, the new high school opened, and the old building became Hudson Middle School.
Suicide of Dennis May and allegations
Dennis C. May Jr. of Stow, a choir teacher at Hudson Middle School and East Woods Elementary School who had been teaching for 13 years, was charged on February 11, 2009, for showing a 7th-grade student a porn video. May’s male student told a school counselor that May showed a sexual video to him on November 21, 2008.[2]
Two days after being accused of the crime, May called 911 to talk to somebody. After being asked whether or not he had a gun in his hand, the police asked him to stay on the phone and that help was on the way, but May ended the call. May committed suicide promptly afterward on February 13. May died from a gunshot wound he had inflicted on himself.[2]
