James Ellis Humphrey (1861-1897) was an American botanist and mycologist.[1]: 123–5  He made notable contributions on Saprolegniaceae. He graduated from Harvard University.[2] In 1892, he was elected to the American Philosophical Society.[3]

The standard author abbreviation Humphrey is used to indicate this person as the author when citing a botanical name.[4]
