Joseph L. Bates (1806 or 1807 – March 2, 1886) was an American merchant based in Boston specializing in musical instruments, umbrellas, stereoscopic photographs and viewers, and fancy goods.

Career

The earliest known mention of Bates' business is in 1829 when he advertised his move to 6 Court Street, Boston, manufacturing musical instruments, umbrellas, and parasols. He offered repair services for the latter two.[1]

His works include stereoscopic photographs of Boston and New England scenery, landscapes, and buildings. He was one of several photographers to produce stereoscopic images in the area of Glen House near Mount Washington (New Hampshire). Images he published included many of Boston's landmark buildings. He also produced still life-style images of a wreath, an arrangement of seashells, and coral.

His photographs are included in the extensive Getty Center photography collection, located in Los Angeles, California.[2]
