Lyn Stanley is an American jazz singer who embarked on her recording career in 2013.

Early life

Stanley was born in Tacoma, Washington where she grew up in a musical family. Her father was a jazz pianist while her grandfather, who had emigrated from Bulgaria, was an opera singer.[1] She began her professional life in advertising, worked as a Fortune 500 marketing executive, and a college adjunct professor/instructor in marketing communications. She also trained as an International Standard amateur ballroom dancer and won USA Pro/Am Dancesport Championship titles in 2010.

Career

In April 2019, veteran radio programmer, Saul Levine awarded Lyn Stanley Female Jazz Vocalist Of The Year 2018.[2] Levine has been the programmer for Los Angeles' largest jazz radio station, KKJZ-88.1FM owned by California State University Long Beach.

From 2010, she became increasingly interested in singing.[3] After taking singing lessons for a few months, in 2013 she launched her singing career with her album Lost In Romance.[4][5][6] She released her 2014 sophomore album, Potions (From the 50s), as an original analog tape album (2 inch 24 track) which was listed on the 2015-2016 Grammy award ballot in four categories.[7]

Stanley has recorded at Capitol Recording Studios, Conway and United Recording studios in Hollywood CA and Avatar Recording Studio in New York City. She has been recognized for her vinyl recordings, hybrid hi fidelity stereo CDs, and music downloads.[8][9]

Stanley's singing career has given her international status with worldwide releases beginning in the jazz vocal genre space. Her debut recording, the 2013 release entitled Lost in Romance, was an overnight international success and she achieved recognition and critical acclaim. Her first two albums became #1 Jazz Vocal albums on CD Baby[10] With the release of her second album, Potions (From the 50s), Stanley tracked popular songs of the 1950s.[11][12] In October 2015 she released her third album, Interludes in Tokyo, Japan[13][14] and launched a USA radio campaign in January 2016 for this album. Engineers Al Schmitt and Bernie Grundman are used for recording, mixing and mastering most of her projects.

On January 15, 2016, a party was held at the La Cicada Club in Los Angeles to celebrate the release of her album Interludes. Annette Warren, at 93, was one of those who performed at the show. Together with her husband, the pianist Paul Smith, Warren had encouraged Stanley to give up competitive ballroom-DanceSport as a USA amateur champion four years earlier in order to become a jazz singer.[15]

In December 2016, Lyn Stanley received The Global Music Silver (Outstanding Achievement) Award for Female Vocal and Album for her Interludes project [1]. She was also nominated by Hollywood Media In Music July 2016 Awards for her song on the Interludes album entitled "Whole Lotta Love" in the jazz category [2]. In December 2016 Lyn Stanley announced her next project entitled The Moonlight Sessions, Volume One and The Moonlight Sessions, Volume Two released in 2017.

In April 2017 a three part story[16] about Lyn Stanley's sound recording career and her 2017 releases of The Moonlight Sessions, Volumes One and Two was released by Part Time Audiophile's writer John Stancavage.[17] Stanley announced the release date of May 30, 2017 for The Moonlight Sessions, Volume One and Volume Two in two formats—double vinyl 45RPM—Special Limited Edition using the One Step pressing process and Super Audio CDs (SACD). This vinyl pressing process was popular in the 1950s before mass production of vinyl records was needed to meet demand. The One Step vinyl album uses the original lacquer to create the Father or Master stamper. Typically most vinyl records are made with the Three Step process whereby Father, Mother and Stampers are all created from one lacquer, hence three steps from the original. The One step process is one step from the original lacquer and therefore closer to the master tape/tracks. The Moonlight Sessions, Volumes One and Two were recorded in February 2017 by Al Schmitt and Steve Genewick. Mixing Engineer was Michael Bishop of Five/Four Productions and the album was mastered by Bernie Grundman of Bernie Grundman Mastering. The musicians on this project include pianists Mike Garson, Christian Jacob and Tamir Hendelman; bassist Chuck Berghofer; guitar by John Chiodini; drummers include Joe LaBarbera, Bernie Dresel and Ray Brinker. Soloists include: Hendrik Meurkens, Rickey Woodard, Chuck Findley, Corky Hale and Carol Robins. All vocals are by Lyn Stanley.

British publication, HiFi Choice featured Lyn Stanley in 2018 as an artist setting a new standard for recording in their story "The New Gold Standard" written by David Niven [18] In this article Niven states "People call her a jazz chanteuse with a voice to make you melt, but she’s more than that – not only someone with solid audiophile sensibilities, but also a denizen of the mixing desk and on a mission to ensure her music, beyond the live experience, can be enjoyed in the highest quality possible." During the same year, Lyn Stanley recorded her sixth album, London Calling: A Toast To Julie London, released in December and receiving critical acclaim by Broadway World "London Calling is by far her best work...absolutely." [19] In this tribute to Julie London, Stanley and her musicians (guitarist John Chiodini; pianists Mike Garson and Christian Jacob; drummers/percussionists Luis Conte, Aaron Serfaty, Paul Kreibich, Brad Dutz; bassists Chuck Berghofer (who worked with Julie London) and Michael Valerio. There are 15 Julie London covers and two additional songs Stanley added as bonus tracks. A video of the background story was created about "The Making of Lyn Stanley's London Calling: A Toast To Julie London" album. The album has by widely acclaimed by audio and music reviewers.[20][21][3][22][23]

In January 2019, Lyn Stanley recorded a Direct to Disc album, London With A Twist-Live At Bernie's, as a live performance follow up to her Julie London tribute that included London covers and some additional songs London did not cover like "Pink Cadillac". The band will include John Chiodini (guitar) Mike Lang and Otmaro Ruiz (piano), Chuck Berghofer (bassist), Luis Conte (percussion) and Aaron Serfaty (drums). Lyn Stanley's music is distributed worldwide and her gross sales since 2013 have exceeded $600,000 with over 40,000 albums sold.
