"Mad Hatter" is a song by American recording artist Melanie Martinez. It appeared as the closing track on her debut studio album, Cry Baby (2015).

Background and composition

"Mad Hatter is a hip hop song, with elements of electronic rock and indie pop. The song has a length of three minutes and twenty-one seconds[1][2] Lyrically, "Mad Hatter" has been known for lyrics about being crazy is the best, and by also being all about having fun and being whimsical.[3] Some lyrics like "So what if i'm crazy? The best people are" were notified as one of the main lyrics.[4]

Critical reception

Tina Roumeliotis from The Daily Listening, was stating that Melanie doesn't care of how crazy she is and that some of the best people are.[5] Jacqueline Bashaw from ArtMag rated the song a 8/10 where she also said "Of course there’s an Alice in Wonderland-themed song! This song has a solid beat, a nice melody, great sound effects, and clever lyrics. Nicely done."[6] In an interview with Noisey Vice she said that the song is "very lyrical, very hip-hop. I wanted it to be about my transition and Cry Baby’s transition into embracing who we truly are. Crazy people.”[7] In a interview with Artist Direct she also said, "Cry Baby wouldn’t have it any other way. That is who she is and cannot fight it. That’s how I am at this point."[8][9]

Live performances

Martinez has only performed "Mad Hatter" at The Cry Baby Tour. She has sang the song as the last track at certain shows.[10][11]

Background and reception

A music video for "Mad Hatter" was released September 23, 2017. Jeff Benjamin from FuseTV said that Melanie's adorable twisted character takes an adventure in Alice in Wonderland–esque elixir, where doughnuts can dance and people can be stabbed by stuffed animals and also be melted in seconds. He also said that it's too creepy to be a pop-song video, Until you watch all the other Crybaby visuals.[12]

Sypnosis

Mike Wass from Idolator represents the sypnosis. "The video begins with Melanie taking a magic potion before tumbling down the rabbit hole where she is greeted by terrifying (but also oddly adorable) stuffed animals. She appears to have finally found her tribe, but things take an unfortunate twist, as they so often do in the singer/songwriter’s world, and our heroine is almost ingested by a family of giants. That’s a thumbnail sketch of a beautifully realized video that features animation from Eight VFX and gorgeous vintage costumes designed by, you guessed it, Melanie Martinez."[13]
