Notion is a project management and note-taking software. Notion is a software designed to help members of a company or organization coordinate deadlines, objectives, and assignments for the sake of efficiency and productivity.

History

Notion Labs Inc is a startup based in San Francisco, and was founded in 2013 by Ivan Zhao.[1] At that time, the founders declined to meet any venture capitalists or discuss acquiring a higher valuation.[2]

In March of 2018, Notion 2.0 was released. It was positively received by Product Hunt and rated #1 Product of the Month.[3] At that point, the company had fewer than 10 employees .[4]

In June of 2018, an official Android app was released.[5]

In September of 2019, the company announced it had reached 1 million users[6] and less than 7 months later In April 2020, Notion became a unicorn[7] after being valued at two billion dollars.

Notion received $50 million in investments from Index Ventures and other investors in January 2020.[6]

On September 7, 2021, Notion acquired a Hyderabad-based startup called Automate.io.[8] In October of that year, a new round of funding led by Coatue Management and Sequoia Capital helped Notion raise $275 million. The investment valued Notion at $10 billion and the company had a total of 20 million users.[9]

In 2022, Notion launched the Notion Certified Program, an official accreditation that allows users to expand their expertise.[10][11] Notion also joined the Security First Initiative, a coalition of tech companies who pledged to share security information proactively with their customers.[12]

Software

Notion is a collaboration platform with modified Markdown support that integrates kanban boards, tasks, wikis, and databases. The software is an all-in-one workspace for note-taking, knowledge and data management, and project and task management.[13] It is a file management tool offering a unified workspace, allowing users to comment on ongoing projects, participate in discussions, and receive feedback. In addition to cross-platform apps, it can be accessed via most web browsers.[14]

The software includes a tool for "clipping" content from webpages.[15] Notion helps users schedule tasks, manage files, save documents, set reminders, keep agendas, and organize their work. Notion allows writing & pasting equations in the form of blocks or inline, as it supports LaTeX. Users can also embed online content in their Notion pages using Embed.ly, in this way notes can also be efficiently typed down alongside an embedded video playing in PiP mode.[citation needed]

Pricing

Notion has a four-tiered subscription model: free, personal, team, and enterprise. It offers an account credit system where users can earn credit via referrals. Users are not charged if they have a remaining balance in their accounts.[citation needed] An academic email address allows a free personal plan. As of May 2020, the company upgraded the Personal Plan to allow unlimited blocks, a change from the previous cap in the Personal Plan.[16]
