The Opening of the depots (Albanian: Hapja e depove) was the opening of the weapon depots in the north, for the protecting against the violence of the south.[1] The decision was taken by Sali Berisha.
Reason
When in the South of Albania the army bases where looted, acquired arms when military arms depots were opened up under a state of anarchy during that time. It was estimate that at the time that every male from the age of ten upwards hadat least one firearm andample ammunition.[2] To protect the civilians in the north and middle Albania, the goverment openend the depos for them.
Weapons taken
During the rebellion 656,000 weapons of various types were looted from army depots, together with 1.5 billion rounds of ammunition, 3.5 million hand grenades, and 1 million land mines.[3]
