Japanese map shows islands as Chinese territory. A 1785 Japanese map, the Sangoku tsūran zusetsu (三国通覧図説) by Hayashi Shihei[1] adopted the Chinese Kanji (釣魚臺 Diaoyutai) to annotate the disputed islands, which were painted in the same color as China.[2]
Chinese map shows islands as Japanese territory. A 1969 map prepared by the People's Republic of China refers to the "Senkaku islands" as Japanese territory.[3]

The Senkaku Islands dispute, also known as the Diayutai Island dispute or the Pinnacle Island dispute concerns a group of uninhabited islands controlled and administered by Japan since 1895. They have been the subject of a territorial dispute since the early 1970s.

The United States controlled the islands as part of its occupation of Okinawa from 1945 to 1972.

These small islands have been claimed by both the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China (Taiwan) since 1971.

The controversial diplomatic issues of sovereignty are marked by a complex range of political considerations and consequences.[4]
