StarFleet Academy is a Science Fiction drama that began production in March 2024. It will be the 7th spin off, part of the long running Star Trek Franchise that began with Star Trek, the original series in 1965. Alex Kurtzman is the executive producer.
Production
The show has a long production history, going back to the late 1980s. Following the movies Star Trek V, the Final Frontier, it had been planned to include William Shatner's James Kirk and Leonard Nimoy's Mr Spock in a Star Trek show based around younger character at Star Fleet Academy. This was to be called Star Trek: The First Adventure or Star Trek: The Academy Years. The plans changed for the main original Star Trek series actors to make Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
StarFleet Academy has featured in many of the Trek Shows, with commentary indicating that Mary Wiseman's character, Tilly leaving the cast of Star Trek Discovery in 2022, was a backdoor pilot for the new show. [1]
Variety initially reported an initial production of the series in 2018, though the team involved would not be the same staff in the eventual production. [2]
Paramount announced the full series to order in early 2023, [3] [4] [5]with the showrunners announced as Noga Landau and Alex Kurtzman. [6]
Variety announc3ed that Rod Roddenberry, Jenny Lumet, Ron Baiers, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber also executive produce. The show is being produced by CBS Studios in association with Roddenberry Entertainment and Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout. [7]
Production on the series started in Mid March, 2024. It was announced that the series would have 10 episodes, with a scheduled airing date of early 2026. [8] Some of the main casting had occurred in early 2024 [9] The show is to be created by executive producer Alex Kurtzman.
Themes
Kurtzman has said the show will have younger actors as the main cast, and will deal with coming of age themes [10] The show will be aiming to bring in new interest in the Trek Franchise. There has been some theories that the show will be a spinoff of Star Trek Discovery, and that Mary Wiseman's character, Tilly, will join the show as an instructor at the Academy.
Paramount initial description of the series spoke of a young group of fleet cadets, learning how to be officers at the academy "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will introduce us to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers" [11] [12]
