The Gates is an upcoming American television soap opera created by Michele Val Jean. The series is the first daytime television soap opera to feature an African-American cast in 35 years and the first new daytime soap to debut in 25 years to debut on national television. It will feature an wealthy African-American family in the central role.

It scheduled to debut on the CBS Daytime programming block in January 2025 and will replace the canceled talk show The Talk.[1]

Per the series’ official description, "The Gates follows the lives of a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community.”

Production

On February 23, 2024, it was reported that Michele Val Jean leaves CBS soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful after 12 years.[2] On March 6, 2024, it was announced that Val Jean is developing a new daytime soap opera that would follow the lives of a wealthy Black family.[3] It will produced by CBS Studios, NAACP production and Procter & Gamble Studios.Val Jean will serve as writer and showrunner and will also executive producer alongside Sheila Ducksworth, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson and Kimberly Doebereiner.[4][5] On March 15, 2024, it was reported that the series is under "Accelerated Development".[6] On April 15, 2024, it was reported that CBS ordered The Gates to series for debut in January 2025.[7][8][9]

The Gates will be the first daytime television soap opera to feature an African-American cast in 35 years since short-lived Generations (1989-1991).[7] It also the first new daytime soap to debut in 25 years to debut on national television since Passions debut in 1999.[10][11]
