"This Is Nigeria" is a song by Nigerian rapper, actor and songwriter Folarin Falana. "This Is Nigeria" is a parody[1] of Childish Gambino This is America. Written by Falz was released on May 25, 2018, as a teaser for national democracy day. The song features background vocals by human right activist Femi Falana.

"This Is Nigeria" is 3:42 minutes long and was directed by Iyobosa Geezy Rehoboth[2] and produced by Wande Thomas.

Composition

The song features background voices on political opinion and choral sounds. According to Falz, the lyrics "address numerous political and social ills"[3] and aim "to spark a reaction in the positive direction". Falz treated Poverty, Unemployment, Insecurity[4], Corruption (including in the church[5]), Vanity, Collective national foolishness, Inadequate infrastructure and the economy

The video highlighted the nation's issues with corruption and organized crime among others.

Music Video

The music video which was directed by Director Geezy[6] saw Falz address the issues of Nigeria shirtless( symbolize Fela ) in a warehouse while a Fulani man commits murder, Chibok/Dapchi girls do the latest dance Shaku Shaku[7], young men get high of codeine[8] and undergrads get molested by SARS[9] and a background of chaotic scenes.

Reviews

The music video received lots of views and engagement on social media. American Rapper Diddy[10] uploaded the music video on his Instagram page and captioned it #Nigeria LETS GO"!.

Critical Reception

In a video interview with Hello Nigeria, Falz discussed the inspiration behind the video, why he did a cover and what the not-so-hidden meanings were. The national mirror video also received critic reviews. 5th of June 2018, a Muslim Rights Concern demanded Falz withdrawal of the music video or face legal action[11]. He was also asked to tender an apology for using women wearing hijab and dancing shaku shaku. This triggered a viral outrage on social media. Nigeria twitter users showed a massive support for the video and also advised the rapper not to take down the video. Falz management later released a statement stating the music video won't be withdrawn.
