The Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile (CHAT) is a non-profit art centre located in the former Nan Fung Textile Mills Company which were revitalized as part of The Mills heritage conservation project.[1][2] CHAT is currently headed by executive director and chief curator Takahashi Mizuki.[3]
History[edit]
CHAT is located in the Tsuen Wan area.[4] The exterior of the art centre dates back to the 1950s, it was built by Nanpo Boshoku. However, the interior was renovated into a spinning factory museum, and a contemporary art museum using textiles.[5] The Mills, is home to the CHAT (Centre for Heritage, Arts, and Textile) as part of its heritage restoration effort.[1]
The founding donor is The D.H. Chen Foundation, and the main donor is Nan Fung Group with a budget of over HK$700 million and a space of roughly 260,000 square feet.[6] To celebrate their 60th anniversary, Nan Fung Development began designing plans in 2014 and The Mills opened in 2018 with construction taking 2 years.[7][8]
Exhibitions[edit]
CHAT opened on-site at The Mills in March 2019 with its inaugural special exhibition Unfolding: Fabric of Our Life, a showcase of 17 contemporary artists and collectives that utilize textiles as histories of textile labourers.[9][10] The exhibition ran through June 2019 and coincided with the unveiling of its permanent exhibition Welcome to the Spinning Factory!, an exhibition dedicated to Hong Kong’s textile industrial history.[11]
In 2015, CHAT launched their Artist-in-Residence program, inviting international artists to create works in Hong Kong and interact with its local textile history and culture; German artist Mariana Hahn from was the first artist in residency.[12]
